The Reader statue at Merrillville wearing a red face mask

Mask Up in the Library!

For the safety of our staff and our patrons, masks are required in library buildings.

While vaccine rollout is proceeding at a steady pace, masks are still our first line of defense against COVID-19.

Masks must be worn properly (covering nose and mouth) the entire time you are in our buildings.

Mask FAQs

Q: Do I need to wear a mask if I'm vaccinated?

A: Yes. The CDC still recommends vaccinated people wear masks in public. This is to protect those around you just in case you are still a carrier.

Q: What if I'm 6 feet away from another person?

A: You must keep your mask on even if you are distant from other patrons and staff.

Q: What kind of mask?

A: Your mask can be any cloth covering that completely covers your nose and mouth and does not have holes. Masks must fit snugly against the sides of your face with no gaps.

Plastic face shields and helmets are not acceptable face coverings. For more info on how to choose a mask, see the CDC's guide to masks.

A common surgical face mask

Q:The CDC said we don't have to wear masks any more.

A: That's a common misconception. The CDC has stated that fully vaccinated individuals can gather in small, private settings with other fully vaccinated individuals without masks.

The library is a public setting, and you don't know which of our other patrons and staff have been vaccinated. Wear your mask.

Q: Does my baby need to wear a mask?

A: Ages 2 and under do not need to wear a mask.

Q: I don't want to/can't wear a mask.

A: We have several services you can use without a mask!

Q: What happens if I don't wear a mask?

A: Refusal to wear a mask violates our rules of conduct and may endanger other library users and staff. You will be asked to leave the library and may lose library privileges.
